Below is Part 6 in National Nonwovens’ continuing Filtration Challenges series,
which discusses solutions to the industry’s difficult challenges.

Filtration Challenge 6: Design a material that captures airborne bacteria and does not enhance bacterial growth.

Bacteria can range from a simple odor creator to something extreme making individuals very ill. It is sometimes difficult, if not impossible, to filter or contain these types of bacteria and prevent them from spreading. Advances in technology and medicines provide new techniques and products to achieve success in our stated challenge. National Nonwovens is a major player in that can produce a filter media to assist in bacteria containment.

Solution:

High Volume Air Filtration in a Medical Environment
National Nonwovens FIL007 (with special anti-bacterial treatments)

bulletHigh permeability
bulletLow pressure drop
bulletHigh depth loading capabilities
bulletMade with 100% Polyester that can be cut or seamed with ultra sonics to form composites or pleated filter media
bulletUnique dual density construction enabling the media to contain activated carbon in composite structure
bulletDoes not contain any heavy metals, BOC's, or organic solvents

When chemically enhanced to control odor and bacteria, FIL007 is an excellent choice for filtering air in medical facilities or nursing homes.

High Efficient Air Filtration Media in a Medical Environment
National Nonwovens FIL011 (with special anti-bacterial treatments)

bullet

Durable filter media constructed with fine denier polyester fiber engineered for high efficiency filtering

bullet

Permeability of 120 cfm's suitable for pre or post filtration

bullet

Does not contain any heavy metals, BOC's, or organic solvents

When chemically enhanced to control odor and bacteria, FIL011 is used as an excellent component/part for a single component or multi-media for filtering. This can be an integral part where a higher degree of contamination is not desired.

Filtration Media for Desiccant Bags & Air Conditioning Units
National Nonwovens FIL006 (with special anti-bacterial treatments)

bulletControls moisture while allowing air to flow through
bulletFIL006 9 oz. can be converted into bags filled with desiccant material and seamed using ultra sonics
bulletDoes not contain any heavy metals, BOC's, or organic solvents

When chemically enhanced with odor and bacteria absorbing technology, this material will provide a safer and more comfortable environment in private rooms for nursing homes, doctor's offices, and medical labs.

National Nonwovens anti-bacterial treated materials were tested by an Independent Lab. The results showed that 99.99% of all known bacteria that came in contact with these materials were killed.

Technology:

The filtering of submicron particles of bacteria can be achieved by the addition of specific chemical compounds that collect molecules on their surface. This type of filtering does not require the fine particle size media that is traditionally used. The specific engineering of these new compounds can control the amount of bacteria passing through the nonwoven to neutralize explicit odors produced by bacterial and prevents the growth of bacteria on the filter media.

Other possible commercial uses for this new treatment material can be:

Furnace and air conditioner filters

Face mask filters

100 Year Anniversary:   National Nonwovens Turns 100

In 1905, National Nonwovens was established, manufacturing strong and durable nonwoven products for consumers, companies, and government agencies. Examples of these products were horse blankets, canteen covers, and back plaster used to comfort a sore back.

National Nonwovens was the first to bring nonwoven manufacturing needlepunch equipment into the United States. The company has produced an overwhelming amount of products in many different industries throughout the years. From filtration, to craft & novelty, to medial and aerospace, National Nonwovens is no stranger to taking on a challenging new concept that could lead to the best product solution.

National Nonwovens takes pride in our Research & Development Team and also our state of the art quality testing & analytical lab that meets many testing standard needs.

In today's world, one of the most important industries is filtration. At National Nonwovens, we leave no stone unturned when it comes to creating new products that could make our lives, and the lives of our customers, easier and healthier.

One hundred years is a huge accomplishment for any United States manufacturing company. We take pride in being the first to bring a great new technology of nonwoven needlepunch to the U.S., and appreciate the gratitude and dedication of our loyal consumers at keeping our company an industry leader.

Keep up to date with Amanda Butler and your Filter Focus E-Newsletters over the next year for new additions to come.

Thank You for being such a loyal customer throughout the years!

Trending in the Industry Fresh, Pollutant Free, Air & Water

As health issues, medical concerns, and pollution increases, the need for cleaner air and water is crucial.

The nonwoven industry is recognized for its filtration products and their ability to filter out pollutants that obstruct the world from breathing fresh air and drinking pure water.

Needlepunched nonwovens have provided the filtration market with a breadth of technology and capability that eclipse the attributes of two dimensional woven fabrics.

Needlepunched nonwovens are constructed with a three dimensional random orientation of fibers. They can incorporate a wide range of fiber deniers, including submicron fibers, and substrates into a complex fiber matrix that can filter finer particles efficiently with increasingly lower energy costs.

National Nonwovens has developed a new highly stabilized light weight needlepunch media without the use of latex bonding. The chemical enhancement of the new light weight needlepunch fibers can be incorporated into a complex composite filter capable of filtering particles, neutralizing chemical compounds, and encapsulating bacteria and odors.

With the continual increase in energy costs and the demand for more functional and efficient filtration media on the rise, nonwoven products are becoming an industry leader.

We will continue our 100 year history of engineering innovative nonwoven materials for the benefit of our customers.  If you want to determine if multi-performance filtration materials can improve your current products, contact us at 800-333-3469.
