Over the decades, National Nonwovens has effectively engineered a variety of complex technical nonwovens specific for the Aerospace Industry. Despite the challenges caused by COVID-19, production of nonwovens used in the Aerospace Industry increased significantly.
Thermal Acoustic Insulation Systems (TAIS) in aircraft interiors remain in strong demand despite market downturn. Meeting this demand are National Nonwovens’ advanced materials complementing custom-fit projects. Several of the products frequently used in aviation completions and refurbishing include:
National Nonwovens partners with Aircraft Completion and Refurbishment Centers providing unparalleled manufacturing capabilities and needling technology. We can manufacture dry-formed webs up to 200” wide. Additionally, advanced needling technology enables us to mechanically interlock and orient fibers to produce dense structural materials to 256 oz/yd2 or soft spongy materials at 1.5 oz/yd2. Products can be chemically enhanced through saturation or coating, adding flame resistance, water repellency, increase in modulus, or other desired properties.
In addition to TAIS, National Nonwovens has many other material and production advances in the aerospace industry. Here are a few other recent successes:

Most of our long-time customers shop by product category and finding their favorite products is easy at Commonwealth Felt. Every color of every style is available with NO minimums.

Our company has an extensive history going back over a century. We began in 1905 as National Felt Co., initially manufacturing wool felt primarily for apparel and home furnishings. Over the decades much has changed, but our dedication to our customers has stayed the same.
Our History page takes you through the journey of how we made important contributions to the country and Americana culture. For example, read about how National Felt was a key military supplier during WWI. Two decades later in 1934, National Felt expanded to create Commonwealth Felt Co. This business unit became the converting division for the company.
Wool felt’s popularity surged during the 1950s. As a result Commonwealth Felt started selling directedly to consumers to keep up with demand. During this time wool felt was featured prominently in magazines and sewing patterns. Homemade heirloom holiday wool felt crafts were found in almost every household. Many were also wearing wool felt as it became popular for the poodle skirts of the era.
It took almost 90 years for Commonwealth Felt to get to where it is today. We are delighted to have this legacy division once again selling directly to consumers.

Face masks became the top new necessity item of 2020 as COVID-19 continues to disrupt lives in every part of the globe. As the supply of single-use face masks dwindles, many companies seek to protect their workers with a better face mask option. A mask that is washable and has a high particle filtration efficiency (PFE).
To answer this demand, National Nonwovens accelerated the development of its specialty nonwoven filtration fabrics. The result is a new filtration style in its PurusFelt® product line that is ideal for face masks. Independent testing company Blue Heaven Technologies tested new PurusFelt® Style FIL039 for effectiveness. Blue Heaven Technologies is a recognized leader in providing state-of-the-art air filtration testing and analytical services. They gave PurusFelt® FIL039 a PFE of 98.2% (3.0. µm) with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 10.
With a MERV 10, National Nonwovens’ PurusFelt® face masks are ideal for environments that do not require masks with a higher MERV – such as hospitals requiring MERV 13-16 – but want more protection than what typical cloth masks will provide. This includes industrial workspaces, superior residential, better commercial, and hospital laboratories.
National Nonwovens developed PurusFelt® as an innovative, mechanically interlocked “scrimless” filter design featuring “pure fiber” for pure filtration. Style FIL039 has many benefits and features making it ideal for face masks. It is comfortable, exceptionally durable, resilient, and reusable. Under normal washing conditions, it can be washed up to 30 times. The material does not fray and has a high seam strength. Another great benefit for corporations is that it is printable and can be embroidered, making custom logos and designs possible. In addition to white nonwoven fabric, PurusFelt FIL039 is also available in “heathered” colors.

We manufacturer all our PurusFelt® Filter materials in the USA at National Nonwovens’ textile mill in Easthampton, MA. For more details, call or email National Nonwovens to receive pricing, specifications, and for additional product information.
