Read about our 115-year history of manufacturing felt in the USA
Our company has an extensive history going back over a century. We began in 1905 as National Felt Co., initially manufacturing wool felt primarily for apparel and home furnishings. Over the decades much has changed, but our dedication to our customers has stayed the same.
Our History page takes you through the journey of how we made important contributions to the country and Americana culture. For example, read about how National Felt was a key military supplier during WWI. Two decades later in 1934, National Felt expanded to create Commonwealth Felt Co. This business unit became the converting division for the company.
Wool felt’s popularity surged during the 1950s. As a result Commonwealth Felt started selling directedly to consumers to keep up with demand. During this time wool felt was featured prominently in magazines and sewing patterns. Homemade heirloom holiday wool felt crafts were found in almost every household. Many were also wearing wool felt as it became popular for the poodle skirts of the era.
It took almost 90 years for Commonwealth Felt to get to where it is today. We are delighted to have this legacy division once again selling directly to consumers.
